21 Weeks

According to The Bump, the baby is the size of an endive.  That doesn't mean much to me, but the measurements are 10.5 inches and 12.5 ounces.  Although at our anatomy scan yesterday, Muffin was estimated to weigh 16 ounces... The What to Expect website says that 21-week babies are the size of a large banana, which is a little easier for me to conceptualize.

This week Muffin is creating meconium (tarry black substance that will be expelled with the baby's first poop) as the digestive system is preparing for the outside world.  Related to digestive development, Muffin is swallowing amniotic fluid and can taste hints of what I'm eating.  More pressure to eat those fruits and veggies!

I have been feeling movement inconsistently since I hit 17 weeks.  Around week 19 I started feeling movement at school, not just when lying down.  And last night, Eric definitely felt some big kicks!  We were lying in bed and Muffin was quite active.  I asked for Eric's hand and within a minute or two, his eyes got wide (and then a bit teary).  Muffin is making his or her presence known to both of us!

Muffin's presence is also more obvious as I get dressed each morning.  My regular clothes are getting more uncomfortable (pants in particular), so I have gone through my maternity clothes - and some of Amy's that she lent me - so that I have more options for the next several weeks.  Time to dress for comfort!
