Progesterone Shots
This week (September 12) we started nightly progesterone injections. The medication is called progesterone in oil - it is pretty thick and is administered with a long needle (almost the length of my pinky finger). The shot is to be given in the buttocks, but higher up than I had imagined. My nurse drew circles on my backside to indicate ideal locations for the injections, which reassures me that we are doing them correctly. I have read and heard from people who have been through IVF, that these injections can be painful, both during administration and in the days afterward. To combat the pain, I have been applying ice to the area before Eric administers the shot, and applying heat after he is finished. This has helped to reduce the discomfort dramatically. We are also able to rotate injection sites, as I have an "inner circle" and "outer circle" drawn on each cheek.
We will continue to do nightly progesterone injections until 12 weeks of pregnancy (assuming we get a positive pregnancy test) or until we are told to discontinue (if we do not get a positive result).
