Nursery Furniture

When Eric changed Gavin's bed into a full-size bed, we moved the glider into the empty bedroom.  Since then, the empty bedroom has been dubbed "The Nursery" and has been collecting small things as we prepare for Muffin's arrival.  As of yesterday, it held the glider, a 3-cube organizer, my breast pump and backpack, and a random box of pamphlets, checklists, and information from Mid-Iowa and my OB group.

The only furniture we needed to purchase was a crib and dresser.  While Gavin's set has been fine, we haven't been overly impressed with it and wanted to see what options existed at a slightly lower price point.  So we did a little bit of preliminary research at home and then spent a morning browsing Buy Buy Baby and Suite Dreams.  We ended up ordering a matching crib/dresser from Suite Dreams on January 5.  The shop owner told us that the shipment should arrive in 4-12 weeks, but they had been trending around 8 weeks.

As of this past Monday (March 23) we hadn't heard any updates on the status of our order, so I called the store to check on it.  They were able to confirm that everything had been shipped and was in Kansas.  As soon as a truck was available to bring the order to Des Moines, it would arrive in their store.  The shop just wasn't sure how quickly that would happen since many trucks have been pulled from their routes to do other assignments due to the Coronavirus outbreak.  So we were just waiting.  But my phone rang on Friday and our order had arrived!  They were able to deliver it to our garage the same afternoon.  I was thrilled with the timing and hinted (not so subtly) to Eric that assembling the nursery furniture would be a great Saturday family activity.

So this morning, we made french toast a sausage and then the boys prepped for their assembly job.  Eric told Gavin he would need shoes and a water bottle, and Gavin happily obliged.  Eric was able to maneuver the crib upstairs fairly easily, and had the whole thing assembled in less than an hour (with only a few missteps and even fewer choice words).  Throughout the process, Gavin alternated "helping" and watching from the doorway.  After about 30 minutes he put on his Marshall (Paw Patrol) Halloween costume and then helped a little more.

We took a break and made some lunch, and then tackled the dresser.  It weighed 150 pounds in the box, so getting it upstairs alone was quite a feat.  It took multiple attempts and some blood, sweat, and tears, (actually huffing, puffing, and a dent in the wall), but Eric persevered and made it happen!  Then Gavin helped to attach the hardware to the drawers.

So now the room is starting to actually look like a nursery!  In the next few weeks I will start washing bedding, receiving blankets and burp cloths, and some newborn and 0-3 month clothing and putting it in drawers.  Soon we'll look at ordering the rest of the "gear" we need from our Amazon registry - we will qualify for the 15% completion discount as of April 7.

Gavin was excited to help set up the nursery this morning and wanted to "try out" the crib with the doll we bought for his birthday.  He asked if he can put Muffin in the crib when he or she is here.  We can't wait to introduce them to each other!
