14 Weeks

We have arrived at the second trimester!  14 weeks is the beginning of the 4th month of pregnancy and a milestone that I was excited to reach.  The first trimester went quickly (probably partly due to the fact that we were already at the 4 week mark when we found out that the transfer was successful).

At 14 weeks, the baby is the size of a peach - about 3.5 inches long and just over an ounce in weight.  This means that Muffin has doubled in weight since last week and this rate of growth will continue.  Muffin is also moving all around, though it will probably be a few more weeks before I can feel the movements.  The kidneys, liver, and spleen are all functioning, the baby is growing hair (on his or her head, eyebrows, and a fuzz all over the body called lanugo), can use facial muscles to grimace or smile, and the brain has a distinct left and right hemisphere.

The second trimester is known as "the honeymoon phase."  I didn't experience any terrible pregnancy symptoms during the first trimester that I'm happy to be leaving behind.  I had mild nausea (especially in the evening), breast tenderness (and incredible itchiness!), and some tiredness.  This weekend, I experienced some very uncomfortable sensations in my abdomen and tailbone.  Apparently this is a common sensation as the uterus continues to grow up and out of the pelvis.  It will be interesting to see if there are any changes in these things during the next few weeks.

I have definitely outgrown a few of my regular bras, so those have been retired.  This week I also noticed that some of my pants feel a bit tighter, or just fit differently.  When I did a workout one morning, I was lying on my stomach for on of the moves and that was noticeably uncomfortable.  As of this weekend, I am "feeling" more pregnant that I have up to this point.  I still have moments of disbelief and wondering if it's too good to be true.  I'm sure once I can't button my pants it will feel even more real!
